Low pressure area in the Gulf of Mannar sea area weaken further - Met. Dept.

The Meteorology Department in its weather report today (Dec 6) states that the low pressure area in the Gulf of Mannar sea area is likely to weaken further. Hence, the influence of this system to the island is expected to be gradually reduced.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Mannar, Trincomalee and Puttalam districts, the report said.

Showers can be expected at a few places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, particularly in the morning and showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places elsewhere after 2.00 p.m.

The marine weather forecast of the Met. Dept. says, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai. Showers will occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the island.

Meanwhile, winds will be south-westerly to south-easterly in the sea areas around the island and the wind speed will be (30-40) kmph. The wind speed can increase up to 50kmph at times over the sea area extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai  via Mannar.

The sea areas around the island will be slight to moderate. The sea area extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai   via Mannar can be fairly rough or rough at times, the report added.
