Navy rescues fishermen from capsized trawler

December 15, 2022

Three local fishermen were rescued from a capsized fishing trawler in the southern seas after a search and rescue operation by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN).

According to SL Navy sources, a search and rescue mission was launched on Tuesday (13 Dec) upon being informed by the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, and Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo.

Navy’s Fast Attack Craft (FAC) P 436, attached to the Southern Naval Command with the assistance of a local fishing trawler in the sea area rescued the fishermen from their capsized trawler about 180 nautical miles (333km) off the Dondra Point in the Sounthern region. Apparently the fishing craft carrying six (6) fishermen which had set out for fishing late last month (22 Nov) from Galle had capsized due to bad weather.

The rescued fishermen were admitted to the District General Hospital in Hambantota after being brought ashore, it says.

While extending their search to locate the other three missing fishermen, naval personnel had recovered a dead body which the rescued fishermen had not identified as one of those missing, it says. The recovered body had also brought ashore.
