Inclement weather likely to worsen over the weekend

The prevalent rainy and windy condition experienced is likely to increase over most parts of the country during the weekend (24 and 25 Dec).

According to the latest forecast of the Meteorology Department issued this morning (23) the depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal is located 370k.m. to the northeast of Trincomalee and is very likely to cross Sri Lanka during the next 48 hours.

Showers could be expected in the Northern, Eastern, Uva and North-Central provinces while thundershowers are likely to occur at several places elsewhere during the afternoon or night, it says.

Strong winds of about 40-50kmph can be expected at times over the Northern, Eastern, Western, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces.

The general public is advised to be alert and take adequate precautions to minimize harm caused by gusty winds and lightning during thundershowers.
