Coastguard nabs illegally harvested shark fish and fins
February 13, 2023Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) nabs a person in possession of illegally harvested shark fish and fins at the Fisheries Harbour in Dikovita yesterday (12).
SLCG said their workforce deployed at the Dikovita Fishery Harbour for fishery monitoring and regulating duties nabbed the suspect with a haul of illegally harvested shark fish and fins following information received from their intelligence crew.
According to SLCG sources, the items were seized during unloading (41 kilos of dried Shark fish and 9.8 kilos of dried shark fins) while they were kept inside the boat.
Mentioning the legal framework, the SLCG further said that retaining, transhipping, selling, or landing the ‘parts of any shark species’ is an offence under the order number 4 of the ‘Fisheries and Aquatic Resources act 1996 No 2’.
The suspect with apprehended items was handed over to the Dikovita Fisheries Inspector for onward legal proceedings, the news added.
