April 26, 2023

Another batch of sea turtle hatchlings was set free to their natural habitat by the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) recently.

SLCG staff employed at the lifesaving posts situated in Mirissa and Hikkaduwa have saved 1139 sea turtle eggs from the areas of their natural habitats of sea turtles and conserved those at the respective life-saving posts and also at original locations where the eggs were laid, the SLCG media said.

Further, they have released 3714 numbers of sea turtle hatchlings into sea from Wellawatte, Mount Lavinia, Panadura, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, Moragalla and Dehiwala beaches during the same period.

Under the Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP), the Coastguard has taken immense effort to conserve turtle eggs in natural habitats of turtles in order to ensure conservation as sea turtles have been recognized as endangered species.

According to SLCG sources, the Coastguard has conserved 46040 turtle eggs and have released 26722 hatchlings into the sea, during this year alone.
