May 08, 2023

The Met. Department says that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western, Southern and Northern provinces and in Trincomalee district. The latest forecast issued by the Department today (08 May) says, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere over the island particularly during the afternoon or night.

Issuing an advisory for Multi-day boats in the South-East Bay of Bengal Sea areas forecasting strong winds and rough sea conditions, the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department says a low-level atmospheric disturbance has developed over the south east Bay of Bengal area and this system will gradually develop into a low-pressure area and then into a cyclonic storm in the next few days.

Wind speed will be (40-50) kmph and can increase up to 60 kmph in sea areas between (05N - 10N) and between (90E – 100E). Wind speed will be (50-60) kmph and can increase up to 70 kmph in sea areas between (01N - 04N) and between (85E – 92E) due to wind convergence in this sea area, it says.

Heavy showers or thundershowers and very rough seas can also be expected in above sea area.

Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued early landslide warning to several areas in the Badulla, Galle, Kegalle and Matale districts.
