SL Navy ship rushes to fetch sick fisherman
May 26, 2023A fisherman on a multi day fishing trawler who had fallen ill while engaged in fishing in the southern seas off Galle was brought ashore by the Sri Lanka Navy today (May 26).
According to Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) media, the fisherman was brought ashore after the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources alerted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), located at the Navy Headquarters, about the emergency. Navy authorities had instructed SLNS Vijayabahu, which was on duties in the southern waters to bring ashore the patient, it says.
The fisherman was among the crew of six onboard the fishing trawler 'Krevin Baba 01’ (Reg. No. IMUL-A-0921 CHW) which had left from Dickkovita fisheries harbour earlier this week (May 23) for fishing, it says.
The patient was transferred to the navy ship in seas about 460 nautical miles (about 851 km) off the coast of Galle and safely brought to the Galle harbour from where he was rushed to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for further treatment, it says.
