SL Army and Navy athletes shine at Asian Athletics Championships

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Navy athletes taking part in the Asian Athletics Championship (AAC) - 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand won several medals including gold, silver and bronze medals.

SL Army athletes won Gold in the 400 ×4 (men’s relay) yesterday (16 July) setting a new Asian Athletics Championship Record and a Sri Lankan Record.

The men’s relay team was comprised of Sergeant H.K.K. Kumarage, Bombardier S.A Darshana, Lance Corporal R.M.R.N Rajakaruna and Gunner G.D.K.K Niku, Army sources stated.

Adding to the medal tally a silver was won by Corporal N. Rathnayaka of Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps who was a member of the 400 ×4 m (women’s relay) team at the AAC .

Corporal N Ramanayake of Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps competing in the 400 m race (women’s category) won a Gold medal.

Similarly, Corporal H.L.N.D Lekamge of the Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps set a new Sri Lankan record (60.93 m) and won the Bronze medal in the Javelin Throw (women’s category) event.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka Navy’s Woman Petty Officer Gayanthika Abeyrathne won a bronze medal in the women’s 800m event. Woman Ordinary Seaman Sayuri Mendis won a silver medal in the women’s 400x4 relay event, Navy media sources state.
