31st Death Anniversary of Lt. Gen. Kobbekaduwa and other war heroes marked

The 31st death anniversary of the late Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne, late Admiral Mohan Jayamaha and several other military officers who made the supreme sacrifice during the terrorist conflict was marked on Tuesday (Aug 8).

Lt. Gen. Kobbekaduwa and his entourage were killed in an explosion at Araly Point in Kayts, Jaffna in 1992.

According to Army media sources, a commemorative ceremony was held at the Kobbekaduwa statue in Anuradhapura in the presence of Maj. Gen. S.W.M Fernando. Mrs Laly Kobbekaduwa, Commander, Security Forces - Wanni, Commander, Security Forces - Central, Senior Officers and military personnel were also present at the occasion held yesterday.

Meanwhile, the commemorative ceremony of Maj. Gen. Vijaya Wimalaratne was held at the Regimental Center of Gajaba Regiment at Saliyapura in Anuradhapura on the same day. General Officer Commanding, 21 Infantry Division Maj. Gen. I.A.N.B Perera and several other senior military officers graced the occasion.

A separate commemorative ceremony by 7 Gajaba Regiment troops was also held at the statue of Maj. Gen. Wimalaratne in Makola, Kiribathgoda. It was graced by Director General Infantry at the Army HQ, Major General K.P.S.A Fernando.

Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, Major General Vijaya Wimalarathne, Rear Admiral Mohan Jayamaha, Lieutenant Colonel H.R Stephen, Lieutenant Colonel G.H. Ariyarathne, Lieutenant Colonel Y.N Palipana, Commander Asanga Lankathilaka, Lieutenant Colonel Nalin de Alwis, Lieutenant Commander C.B Wijepura and Private W.J Wickremasinghe made the supreme sacrifice in a landmine blast while crossing the Araly Point in Kayts, Jaffna druing the terrorist conflict.
