SLESA celebrates its 79th Anniversary

The Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association (SLESA) celebrated its 79th Anniversary with the gracious presence of Defence Secretary, General Kamal Gunaratne yesterday (03 Sept) at Attidiya Eagles' Lakeside Banquet and Convention Hall. General Gunaratne was warmly welcomed by Major General Upul Perera (Retd) President of the SLESA when he arrived at the venue.

Established in 1944, the SLESA has offered membership to over 45,000 tri-service personnel in 48 associations of armed forces. Addressing the august gathering, General Kamal Gunaratne warm-heartedly recalled the memories of fallen war veterans and paid his gratitude to the Ex-Servicemen who rendered noble duty for the nation.

Addressing the ceremony, the Defence Secretary revealed his intention to start an elderly housing complex to take care of veterans who become helpless after retirement and a program to provide financial support for their care. He further stated that he hopes to implement this program without using any government funds.

On this occasion, the Defence Secretary also expressed his gratitude for the support provided by the Hon. President and the Ministry of Finance for solving the problems of the retired war veterans.

Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva, Army Commander Lt. Gen. Vikum Liyanage, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, Air Force Commander Air Vice Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, SLESA Secretary Lt. Col. Ajith Siyambalapitiya (Retd) and a large number of members of SLESA attended the event.
