Met. Department forecasts more rain

The latest weather forecast of the Meteorology Department issued today morning (Sep 20) predict showers at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts while fairly heavy showers above 50mm can be expected at some places.

Several spells of showers may occur in the North-western province and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya and Hambantota districts. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Uva and Eastern provinces during the evening or night, it says.

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has also issued Level 1 (Yellow) landslide warnings to areas in the Divisional Secretary (DS) Divisions of Elptiya and Nagoda in the Galle district, Dodangoda, Agalawatte, Mathugama and Walallawita DS Divisions in the Kalutara district, Dehiovita, Bulathkohupitiya, Yatiyantota and Deraniyagala DS Divisions in Kegalle district, Pasgoda, Pitabeddara DS Divisions in the Matara district and to Eheliyagoda DS Division in the Ratnapura district.

The maximum rainfall of 77 mm was reported from Derangala in Matara.

Meanwhile sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo, Galle and Matara may experience showers or thundershowers.

Winds will be south-westerly and speed will be 25-35 kmph which can increase up to 40-45 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil, it says.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil may be fairly rough at times. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers, it says.
