Met. Department says afternoon rains possible in most provinces
November 06, 2023- Minor flood warning to Deduru Oya
The Metrological Department in its latest weather forecast issued today morning (Nov. 6) predicts widespread showers or thundershowers in most provinces after 02.00 p.m.
Fairly heavy showers above 75mm are likely at some places in the Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and North-Central provinces. Showers may also occur in the Northern and Eastern provinces during the morning too.
Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the morning.
A maximum rainfall of 146.9mm was recorded from Anuradhapura during the last 24 hours.
The National Building Reasearch Organization (NBRO) has issued a Level 2 (Amber) landslide warning to several areas in the Badulla, kandy and Ratnapura districts while a Level 1 (yellow) warning has been issued to several areas in the Matara and Hambantota districts.
Meanwhile the Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning to Deduru Oya due to continuous rain in upstream / middle reach / downstream catchment areas of the river basin. The Deduru Oya reservoir is spilling with a discharge rate of 17,000 cubic feet /sec and there is a possibility of increase in the spill discharge from the reservoir which may lead to a minor flood situation in low lying areas of the Deduru Oya valley situated in the Wariyapola, Nikaweratiya, Mahawa, Kobeigane, Bingiriya, Pallama, Chilaw, Arachchikattuwa and Rasnayakapura Divisional Secretariat divisions. Therefore residents and people traveling along these areas are requested to be vigilant in this regard.
