The State Minister of Defence Hon. Premitha Bandara Tennakoon while attending the customary New Year’s Day ceremony at the Defence Ministry this morning (Jan 1) stated ‘Defence Ministry staffers are entrusted with significant responsibilities and all must endeavour to strive to achieve national goals with utmost dedication’.

‘As we step into a new year, let us remember and honour our fallen heroes, those who sacrificed their lives to the motherland, protecting our freedom and safeguarding our way of life. Their courage, dedication and selflessness should never fade from our collective memory’, Defence Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne stated speaking at the ceremony held this morning.

The ceremony commenced with religious observances led by Venerable Maha Sangha. State Minister Tennakoon hoisted the national flag which was followed by the recitation of the national anthem. A two-minute silence was observed in memory of the fallen war heroes. Subsequently, all employees of the Ministry took the government servant’s oath.

Senior Ministry officials, Heads of all institutes under the purview of the Ministry, senior Tri Forces and Police officers and Ministry employees were also present at the occasion.
