Sri Lanka Army Deploys Troops to Ensure Healthcare Continuity
amidst Health Sector Strike

In a move to ensure uninterrupted access to essential healthcare services amidst an island-wide strike by health sector trade unions, the Sri Lanka Army deployed troops to government hospitals across the country today (13 February 2024). With the aim of maintaining continuity in healthcare services, the Ministry of Health initiated discussions with the Ministry of Defence, seeking assistance in managing the situation effectively. Under the directives of the Ministry of Defence and the guidance of Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, the Commander of the Army, troops were swiftly deployed to various healthcare facilities nationwide.

Currently, nearly 900 troops are deployed under the full supervision of respective Security Forces Commanders to maintain the daily operations of 48 hospitals, including Colombo and Kandy National Hospitals, Kalubowila, Karapitiya, Mahmodara, Peradeniya, Anuradhapura, and Kurunegala Teaching Hospitals, as well as the Eye Hospital Colombo and hospitals in Matale, Polonnaruwa, Medirigiriya, Higurakgoda, Batticaloa, Dehiattakandiya, Hambantota, Debarawewa, Ratnapura, Balangoda, Eheliyagoda, Nawalapitiya, Badulla, Elpitiya, Homagama, and Kegalle, without interruption. Further, troops also remain on standby to deploy swiftly in case of emergencies.
