Navy-made thalassemia infusion systems handed over to
Girls High School, Kandy for distribution

The Sri Lanka Navy in the first week of March 2024 symbolically handed over 15 thalassemia infusion systems to the Interact Club of Girls High School, Kandy, to be distributed among needy patients. Continuing the Naval Social Responsibility project, the Naval Research and Development Unit of the Navy produced these thalassemia infusion systems.
The infusion system is very essential for thalassemia patients for the removal of excessive iron deposits gathered in vital organs as a result of frequent blood transfusions. As a unit price of a similar infusion system is very high in the market, a low-cost thalassemia infusion system was first manufactured in 2011 by the Navy Research and Development Unit, for distribution among patients in need. As of now, the Navy has distributed about 2800 infusion system amongst hospitals and thalassemia patients at several stages.
This occasion was attended by the Commanding Officer SLNS Shilpa Captain Sanjeewa Annathugoda and school girls from the Interact Club of Girls High School.
