SLAF Empowers Youth with Aviation Experience

March 12, 2024

Under the esteemed guidance of the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa and the diligent supervision of the Director General Air Operations, Air Vice Marshal Lasitha Sumanaweera, an exclusive opportunity was extended today (11 March 2024) to schoolchildren who showcased a profound interest in aviation during the Air Tattoo 2024. This opportunity entailed a comprehensive briefing on the AN-32 aircraft along with a close view. During this interaction, students engaged in productive discussions with pilots, enriching their knowledge base.

Furthermore, special emphasis was placed on encouraging and engaging schoolgirls, who enthusiastically expressed their interest in aviation, particularly during discussions with the Lady Pilot, one of the first enlistments of female aviators to the Sri Lanka Air Force. As part of the experience, students were granted access to the interior of the AN-32 aircraft, including the cockpit, providing them with a firsthand glimpse into aviation operations.

It is noteworthy that this unique opportunity arose from friendly discussions prompted by the National Security Advisor, Hon. Sagala Ratnayake with two schoolgirls who delivered the briefing on the AN-32 engine to visitors at the Air Tattoo 2024.

This collaborative effort paved the way to boost interest in aviation among the youth, laying a foundation for future generations of aviators.
