DG INSS Colonel Nalin Herath addressed Regional Seminar in Bangladesh

Overlooking Director General of the Institute of National Security Studies (INSS), Director of Media and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Defence Colonel Nalin Herath delivered a lecture at regional seminar on “Labour Migrants from South Asia: Issues and Concerns” held in Bangladesh on 23 April.
 
The seminar was organized by Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) in collaboration with the Consortium of South Asian Think Tanks (COSATT) and Political Dialogue Asia Programme, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS). Colonel Herath participated in the Seminar at the invitation of the BIISS and COSATT.

During the seminar, Prime Minister’s Economic Affairs Adviser Dr. Mashiur Rahman as the Chief Guest addressed the audience and spoke about the contribution of labour migrants to the South Asian economy and highlighted Bangladesh’s enthusiasm for working together with other countries.

Eminent local and International speakers who gathered at the seminar highlighted the emerging challenges of labour migration from South Asia and urged all actors to work together to secure the rights of the migrants.

Addressing the seminar, Col. Herath elaborated on effects of labour migration in South Asia on Sri Lanka. While labour migration offers the potential for economic growth and poverty reduction, it also raises concerns about exploitation, social dislocation and inequality. Addressing these issues requires concerted efforts from government, civil society and international organization to ensure that labour migration is safe fair and beneficial for all stakeholders involved.

Additional Secretary, Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Khairul Alam who was the special guest of the occasion gave a valuable insights during his contribution at the seminar.

Senior officials from different ministries, diplomats, senior civil and military officials, media, academia, researchers, faculties and students from various universities and representatives from international organisations participated in the seminar.
