Discussion to review progress and further relief measures for flood victims held

A special discussion to review the progress of actions taken by the government to provide relief to the people displaced due to adverse weather conditions caused by the South West Monsoon and further required relief measures was held under the patronage of the State Minister of Defence Hon. Premitha Bandara Tennakoon at the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) in Colombo, today (Jun 05).

State Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Ashoka Priyantha and Member of Parliament Hon. Rajika Wickramasinghe also participated in the discussion.

Matters related to how the approved daily allocations which was increased by 33% for providing food to those housed at safe centers and for providing dry rations to people cut off due to blockage of access roads could be systematically and quickly made available to the affected people and also about the facilities including hygiene facilities available for people in safe centers were taken for discussion.

In addition, an inquiry was also made about the nutritional standards of the food provided to the people in safe centers and directions were given to provide tea twice a day and two milk teas to the children in addition to the main meals.

Rescue and relief operations are being carried out continuously by giving priority to request calls received at the 24-hour emergency number 117 established at the DMC and accordingly, people are advised to obtain necessary assistance by informing the DMC officials on the hotline regarding any emergency situation.

The discussion was attended by Governors, District and Divisional Secretaries, local government body officials of the affected areas, electricity board, health sector including public health inspectors, public administration service and DMC officials.
