Defence Secretary graces Army 'Weera Matha' Felicitation Ceremony

Defence Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne graced the ‘Weera Matha’ Feliciatation Ceremony as the chief guest at the Sri Lanka Army Headquarters in Sri Jayawardenapura, Kotte today (Jul 12). The Defence Secretary was received by Army Commander Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage on his arrival at the Army HQ this morning.

Chairperson of the Ministry of Defence Seva Vanitha Unit Mrs. Chithrani Gunaratne was also present at the occasion.

The ceremony was held in view of the 40th Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Army Seva Vanitha Unit (SLA SVU) to felicitate families of fallen war heroes and veteran war heroes awarded with the ‘Parama Weera Vibhushanaya’ (PWV) and ‘Weera Wickrama Vibhushanaya’ (WWV) medals.   

The ceremony commenced with the observing of a moment of silence to commemorate all war heroes who laid down their lives to safeguard the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the motherland. Financial contributions were presented to the war veterans and families of war heroes as a mark of gratitude for their sacrifices to the nation.

Speaking at the event Gen. Gunaratne praised the sacrifices and services of the war heroes while sharing his own battlefield experience.

Chairperson of the Army SVU Mrs. Mrs. Janaki Liyanage, Army Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Rohitha Aluvihare, Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Indu Samarakoon, senior army officers, army SVU officials and many war heroes and war hero family members were present at the occasion.
