Defence Secretary reviews progress of Neelagiri Stupa

Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) made an observation visit today (Nov. 10) to inspect the restoration work of the historic Neelagiri Stupa, which is considered to be the largest in the Eastern Province located in the Lahugala forest reserve.
Restoration work of the Stupa, which had been neglected for over three decades due to terrorist activities in the past, was restarted in January 2022 with human resource contribution of Sri Lanka Air Force.
After taking part in religious observances, Defence Secretary inspected the progress of the project. He gave necessary instructions during a subsequent discussion with project officials.
Maha Sangha, including Ven. Angulugamuwe Ariyananda Thero, and Ven. Lahugala Sumanasara Thero of Na Uyana Asapuwa, Director General of Civil Security Department Air Vice Marshal Roshan Biyanwila, SLAF Deputy Chief of Staff Air Vice Marshal Suresh Fernando, Security Force Commander (East) Major General Shewanth Kulatunga, Military Liaison Officer of the Defence Ministry Air Vice Marshal Padman De Costa, 24 Divisional Commander Major General Anil Perera, senior military officers, government officials and project officials were also present on the occasion.
