Deputy Minister of Defence Reviews Flood Relief Efforts in Ampara

Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), visited the disaster-affected Ampara district on November 28 to assess the flood situation and oversee ongoing relief operations.

A special meeting was convened at the Ampara District Secretariat with officials from the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), senior state officials and tri-forces senior officers. During the meeting, participants reviewed the current situation, discussed ways to strengthen disaster relief measures for affected families and planned efforts to mitigate further risks.

The Deputy Minister was briefed by DMC officials on the extent of the disaster, including losses and damages to lives and property, as well as ongoing challenges in the district. He instructed officials to expedite relief efforts, ensure uninterrupted essential services and prioritize normalizing civilian life. The discussion also emphasized disaster prevention, public safety measures and strengthening welfare arrangements for those housed in relief centers.

The meeting was attended by parliamentarians, the Commander of the Army, the District Secretary, divisional secretaries, DMC representatives and senior armed forces officers.

Following the meeting, the Deputy Minister conducted an inspection tour of areas severely impacted by the floods caused by recent inclement weather. He personally inquired about the well-being of affected families and ensured that all necessary measures were in place to address their immediate needs
