Rainy weather to continue - Met Department

  • Tri forces teams on standby for disaster relief operations

The Meteorology Department in its latest forecast issued today (Jan 20) morning says the prevailing rainy condition to continue further. It says showers or thundershowers will occur in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces. The island is experiencing widespread rains causing flooding in low lying areas of several rivers.

The forecast predicts very heavy showers above 150 mm at some places in the Eastern and Uva provinces and in the Hambantota district. Heavy showers of above 100 mm can be expected at some places in the Northern province and in the Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Polonnaruwa, Galle and Matara districts.

A maximum rainfall of 178.0mm was recorded from Trincomalee.

The Irrigation has issued a flood warning to downstream areas of the Malwathu Oya, Kala Oya and Gal Oya.

Fairly strong winds (30-40 kmph) can be expected at times over the eastern slope of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, Eastern and North-western provinces and Hambantota and Monaragala districts.

Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued a Level 2 (Amber) landslide and warning for Rattota, Yatawatte, Wilgamuwa and Ukuwela Divisional Secretary (DS) Divisions in the Matale district and Ududumbara and Doluwa DS Divisions in the Kandy district. A Level 1 (Yellow) landslide warning includes several areas in the Badulla, Kandy, Kurunegala and Matale districts.

With the developing rainy weather, tri forces troops are kept on standby to assist disaster management operations. According to the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) media reports, Navy flood relief teams, with lifesaving equipment are already in operation in some flood affected areas.
