Deputy Minister of Defence Visits Navy Headquarters

Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), made his inaugural visit to the Navy Headquarters on Monday (Feb 10). Upon arrival, he was accorded a traditional Guard of Honour and warmly received by the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda.

During his visit, the Deputy Minister engaged in a productive discussion with the Commander of the Navy, which concluded with a ceremonial exchange of mementoes, symbolizing the significance of the occasion.

A detailed briefing was delivered by the Director General Operations, outlining the Sri Lanka Navy’s organizational framework, naval diplomacy initiatives, contemporary challenges, research and development efforts and strategic plans for the future. Addressing the Navy’s Board of Management, the Deputy Minister underscored the Navy’s critical role as a strategic force essential to national security.

He later addressed naval personnel and civil staff, commending the Navy for its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests. He emphasized the immense responsibility entrusted to the Navy as the primary maritime force of an island nation.

Furthermore, Major General Jayasekara (Retd) expressed his appreciation for the Navy’s active involvement in the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ initiative, recognizing its contribution to environmental sustainability. He highlighted the vital role of naval personnel in supporting national development and policy implementation.

Acknowledging the Sri Lanka Navy’s international reputation as a formidable maritime force, he stressed the importance of continuous advancement in capabilities, technological expertise and professional excellence. He urged officers and sailors alike to enhance their skills and knowledge, fostering a culture of professionalism and innovation.
