The Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association (SLESA) commemorated its 80th anniversary on Sunday (Feb 16) with a grand celebration at the Tamarind Banquet Hall in Delgoda. The event was held under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), who was warmly welcomed by SLESA President, Lieutenant Colonel Ajith Siyambalapitiya (Retd).

Founded in 1944, SLESA represents a community of over 45,000 members across 48 affiliated armed forces associations. As the chief guest, the Deputy Minister paid tribute to both fallen and retired war heroes, acknowledging their unwavering dedication and sacrifices for the nation.

In his address, he reiterated the government’s steadfast commitment, under the guidance of His Excellency the President, to the welfare of retired military personnel and the families of those who were wounded or fallen in service to the country. He emphasized ongoing efforts to support these individuals, ensuring their well-being and financial security.

During the event, members were also briefed on the initiatives of the Senior Committee, appointed by the Ministry of Defence, which aims to identify and address the concerns of retired service members.

Additionally, distinguished members were honoured with two prestigious awards. The “Life Membership Medal” was conferred upon those who had actively participated in the SLESA General Conferences for a decade and served on sub-committees or special committees for five years. The “Honourable Service Medal” was awarded to life members who had demonstrated exceptional dedication to the association.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo and SLESA Secretary Colonel Sujith Jasekara (Retd), along with other distinguished guests.
