Special Discussion on the Enshrining of Relics and Treasures of Neelagiri Stupa

February 18, 2025

Under the renovation project of the Neelagiri Stupa, arrangements are being made to hold a grand ceremony to enshrine the sacred relics and treasures of the Neelagiri Maha Seya in its relic chamber on March 04, (2025).

A special discussion on the preparation work was held at the Defence Ministry today (February 18) chaired by the Defence Secretary, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyakontha (Retd).

The discussion focused primarily on the ceremony of enshrining the relics and treasures, and the current progress of the renovation work and the systematic completion of the remaining work.

Neelagiri Stupa is considered the largest Buddhist stupa in the Eastern Province, and this religious site had been neglected for over three decades due to terrorist activities in the region. Recognizing the need to restore this stupa to its former glory, renovation work was resumed last year.

The Chief Incumbent of Na Uyana Temple, Venerable Angulgamuwe Ariyananda Thero, the Coordinator of Na Uyana Temple, Dr. Nalaka Lankasena, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Chaminda Wickramaratne, senior Air Force officers and the Military Liaison Officer of the Ministry of Defense also participated in this discussion.
