Deputy Minister of Defence graces Defender of the Fatherland's Day ceremony
February 20, 2025Gracing the "Defender of the Fatherland's Day" ceremony at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo on Wednesday, (Feb 19), Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) emphasized the enduring and evolving nature of the relationship between the Russian Federation and Sri Lanka, which has flourished since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1957.
The Deputy Minister was received by the Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, H.E. Levan S. Dzhagaryan on his arrival at the venue last evening.
Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) was also present at the occasion.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Deputy Minister expressed appreciation for Russia's continued support across a diverse range of areas including trade, economic, technical, scientific, cultural, and defence cooperation.
He highlighted the Russian government's commitment to education, especially providing scholarships to Sri Lankan students to pursue studies at Russian universities.
The robust partnership between Russia and Sri Lanka, characterized by mutual respect and trust, is well-positioned for continued growth and prosperity in the years ahead, as both nations work towards promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in our respective regions, he further said.
Tri-Forces Commanders, senior Defence Ministry officials, former Commanders and members of the diplomatic corps were also present at the occasion.
