Russian Ambassador Meets Deputy Minister of Defence

Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Colombo, His Excellency Levan S. Dzhagaryan paid a courtesy visit to Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), Deputy Minister of Defence, on Tuesday (Mar 18) at the Deputy Minister's office.

The Deputy Minister extended a warm welcome to Ambassador Dzhagaryan and engaged in a cordial discussion focused on enhancing bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and the Russian Federation. He expressed gratitude for Russia's support during Sri Lanka's conflict period, acknowledging its contribution to enhancing the military's capacity and the humanitarian assistance.

Both parties emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation across various sectors, such as defence collaboration and maritime security.

The Russian envoy reiterated Russia's commitment to maintaining traditional friendly relations with Sri Lanka and emphasized Russia's policy of non-interference in domestic affairs.

The Defence Attaché of the Russian embassy in Colombo, Colonel Sergey Belyankin, highlighted the strong military relationship with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) regarding training and expressed the desire to further expand foreign ties. Additionally, he proposed educational opportunities for young Sri Lankans aged 12 and above at Russian military cadet naval schools, with the concurrence of the MoD and the Ministry of Education.

Second Secretary of the Russian embassy in Colombo, Ms. Galina Kuklina was also present at the meeting.
