UN Resident Coordinator to Sri Lanka Meets Deputy Minister of Defence
March 28, 2025Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), held a meeting with the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Sri Lanka, Marc-André Franche, on Thursday (Mar 27) at his office in Colombo.
This meeting followed an initial discussion held last month and centred on strengthening Sri Lanka’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations. The Deputy Minister underscored the strategic significance of expanding the country’s role in these missions, highlighting the extensive experience and capabilities of Sri Lankan forces. He reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to assuming greater responsibilities within UN peacekeeping initiatives, which would serve both national and international interests.
Marc-André Franche acknowledged Sri Lanka’s contributions to UN peacekeeping efforts, commending the professionalism and dedication of its forces.
The discussion also explored potential exchange programs aimed at fostering greater awareness and dialogue on emerging trends in UN peacekeeping. These initiatives, involving subject matter experts and Sri Lankan forces, seek to enhance collaboration and preparedness for future missions.
Additionally, the Deputy Minister expressed his appreciation to the UN team in Sri Lanka for their continued support and goodwill toward Sri Lankan communities.
Both parties agreed to hold further discussions in the future to continue advancing these collaborative efforts.
