Navy foiled an attempt of smuggling drugs worth over Rs. 600 mn
January 04, 2021Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) foiled a drug smuggling attempt into the island via western seas and nabbed over Rs. 600 million worth of illegal drugs today (Jan 4).
Over 100 kilos of Crystal Methamphetamine (ICE) and approx. 80 kilos of Hashish packed in nine packs with four drug peddlers were seized during the operation conducted at the seas off Negombo, SLN said.
The SLN also seized the multiday fishing trawler used to transfer the narcotic substances.
The operation planned to circle the drug smuggling was carried out with the assistance of intelligence agencies, Police Narcotic Bureau and the Sri Lanka Air Force.
Four suspects identified as residents of Thoduwawa area in Chilaw, drugs and the trawler were handed over to the Police Narcotic Bureau, Colombo for onward legal proceedings.
The entire operation was conducted adhering to healthcare guidelines, the SLN also confirmed.
