Army raised new Corps to develop agriculture in Sri Lanka
January 08, 2021The Corps of Agriculture and Livestock was officially established yesterday (Jan 07) at the Army Headquarters by the Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army General Shavendra Silva.
The new Corps was raised under the Agriculture and Livestock Directorate to handle the mechanism to empower agri-entrepreneurs by increasing the country's agricultural production through a systematic strategic plan utilizing modern technology and knowledge.
This objective conforms with the National Policy of His Excellency the President, ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’ in creating a prosperous country.
The Corps consisting of 5 battalions each with 28 officers and 725 other ranks, will be functioning under the supervision of the Director General of Agriculture and Livestock, Maj. Gen. Indrajith Kadanarachchi,.
Three battalions have already been established in Ambalangoda, Kandakadu and Nochchiyagama areas and two more battalions are proposed to be established soon.
The Army operates a number of farms and agro-projects throughout the island and plans to set up agro-resource centers, cold storage facilities, development of inland fisheries business and a Tri-Forces Agricultural Research & Development Center in future.
