Met. Dept. alerts on heavy showers above 100 mm at some places

Metereology Department in its weather report for next 24 hours states that showery weather over the island is expected to enhance to some extent, due to the low level atmospheric disturbance to the south-east of Sri Lanka, during next few days from tonight (Jan 09).

The report also states showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern, Eastern, North-Central, Central, Uva and North-Western provinces and in Hambanthota district. Heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected at some places.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere particularly in the evening or night. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm can be expected at some places.

Therefore, the general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The marine weather forcast of the Met. Dept. informs that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Galle via Trincomalee and Pottuvil.

Heavy showers can be expected at some places. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island.

Winds will be north-easterly in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Matara via   Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee and Hambantota and wind speed will be (25-35) kmph. Winds will be North-easterly or variable in direction in the other sea areas around the island. Wind speed will be (15-25) kmph.

The sea areas around the island can be moderate and temporary strong gusty winds and rough seas can be expected during thundershowers, the report confirmed.
