Bellanwila Temple’s ‘Bo-Tree Precinct’ expansion inaugurated

Hon. Prime Minister and the Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa laid the foundation stone auspiciously for the sacred Bo-Tree Precinct (Bodhigara) development project at the Bellanwila Temple today (Feb 13).

Secretary, Ministry of Defence and the State Ministry of National Security, Home Affairs and Disaster Management and Chairperson of ‘Archaeological Heritage Management Presidential Task Force’ (PTF) for Eastern Province, Gen. Kamal Gunaratne (Retd) also laid a foundation stone.

Bo-Tree Precinct is also a famous solid structure among the ancient Buddhist architecture.

The sacred Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya is one of the most venerated Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, dating back to Anuradhapura era and many devotees gather to worship the Bo-Tree since it is considered as one of the thirty two outgrowth bud saplings of the sacred ‘Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi’ situated in Anuradhapura.

Venerable Maha Sanga including Ven. Prof. Kotapitiye Rahula Anunayake Thero, Chief Incumbent of Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya Ven. Dr. Bellanwila Dhammaratana Nayaka Thero, Chief Incumbent of Abhayarama temple Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thero, Ministers, Navy and Air Force Commanders, and a large gathering of devotees were also present at the event.
