Troops doused Kerawalapitiya garbage dumping site fire
February 19, 2021The Sri Lanka Army, Navy and Air Force troops have jointly doused a rapidly spreading fire at the Kerawalapitiya garbage dumping site which had triggered last evening (Feb 18).
The Army’s Drone Regiment, 15 Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment and a Bell 412 Helicopter equipped with a Bambi Bucket also joined the operation to support the emergency firefighting teams.
Heavy machinery and bulldozers were also operated to flatten the garbage heaps to avoid any re-ignition of the flames following the emitting of methane gas from the garbage pile.
Reportedly neither properties nor civilians were injured/damaged due to the fire erupted.
The firefighting operation was deployed under the directives of the Chief of Defence Staff.
The Army said, the troops of the 6 Gemunu Watch, 8 Sri Lanka Light Infantry and 1 Sri Lanka Armoured Corps together with emergency teams of the Navy and Air Force untiringly exerted their effort to control the fire.
