Sensational evening for 'Mihindu Seth Medura' war veterans

February 21, 2021

A colourful dinner night was hosted to the differently able war veteran inmates at the 'Mihindu Seth Medura', Attidiya under the aegis of Defence Ministry's Seva Vanitha Unit (SVU) Chairperson Chithrani Gunaratne last evening (Feb 20).

The ‘Mihindu Seth Medura', is a healing home for war veterans who were disabled during the battle. It is also a 'Home Away Home' for the gravely disabled heroes with restricted movements requiring continuous care, attention and assistance.

Defence Ministry’s SVU Chairperson accompanied by Secretary, Ministry of Defence and State Ministry of National Security and Disaster Management Gen. Kamal Gunaratne (Retd), Chief of Defence Staff, Tri-Forces Commanders, Director General Civil Security Department (CSD) and Presidents of Tri-Forces and CSD SVUs distributed gifts to those spending their rest of the life in beds.

The defence high officials associating with the inmates shared pleasantries with them and also inquired into the progress of their well-being during the gathering.

Afterwards, the cultural troupe of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) performed a ‘Pooja Dance’ while commencing the proceedings of the colourful evening.

Signifying the recent Valentine Day, Red Roses were also offered to the differently able war veterans amidst the programme by the female dancers.

Famous songs, 'Daru Duka' and 'Yuda Gini Dumaraya' composed by Gen. Kamal Gunaratne were also sung by famous vocalists Shashika Nisansala and Umaria Sinhawansa.

Renowned Sri Lankan outdoor POP Band, 'Flashback' led by popular singer Roshan Fernando brought the rhythmic evening to a greater musical height while entertaining the audience. Famous singer Nalin Perera also performed.

Gift packs were presented to the war veterans and several publications of Gen. Kamal Gunaratne were also presented to the Mihindu Seth Madura Library, during the event.

Further, in an appreciative gesture, SVU Chairperson Chithrani Gunaratne gave away souvenirs to the artists and the band who added colour and entertained the war heroes.

The Mihindu Seth Medura, the first of such amenity built in South Asia, is a brainchild of His Excellency the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa when he was the Defence and Urban Development Secretary.

The yesterday's musical entertainment followed by dinner bestowed an unforgettable evening to all attendees and war heroes.

Additional Secretaries of the Defence Ministry, Military Liaison Officer, other members of respective SVUs, staffers of the 'Mihindu Seth Medura', senior military officers and other ranks were also present at the event.
