February 28, 2021

The Sri Lanka Navy, (SLN) had rescued yesterday (Feb 27) two stranded fishermen who ventured into sea from Mannar on Feb 23.

Responding to a request made by the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the rescue mission was deployed along with the assistance of Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo, the SLN said.

According to the SLN, those fishermen had encountered a technical failure in their craft during the voyage.

Following the matter being brought to the notice of MRCC - Chennai by the Colombo Centre, an Indian Coast Guard Ship had assisted the ill-fated craft and its fishermen to reach the international maritime boundary.

The Sri Lanka Naval Ship ‘Suranimila’ fetched them ashore.

The support extended by the MRCC Colombo has led to rescue 25 stranded fishermen at sea so far, the SLN also said.
