Defence Secretary visits Sri Lanka Coast Guard Headquarters
March 04, 2021Defence Secretary and National Security and Disaster Management State Ministry Secretary Gen. Kamal Gunaratne (Retd), arrived at the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) Headquarters yesterday (Mar 3).
The SLCG’s Director General (DG) Rear Admiral Anura Ekanayake received the visiting high official and a ceremonial Guard of Honour was also accorded upon his arrival.
Gen. Gunaratne was briefed on the progress of the SLCG including its future aspirations during a meeting held with the SLCG officials at the Headquarters.
Defence Secretary also declared open a fully-fledged Gymnasium at the SLCG headquarters at the invitation of the Director General Rear Admiral Ekanayake.
The SLCG is the premier maritime law enforcement agency functioning under the purview of the Defence Ministry.
Having entrusted to safeguard the security of the coastal areas, Maritime Zones, the territorial waters and the high seas of the country, the SLCG has also been empowered to assist in preventing the entry and exit of illegal immigrants and emigrants and the trafficking of narcotics, drugs and contraband.
Assisting vessels in distress at sea, marine environment protection, safety of life at sea and prevention and combating of maritime disasters are also assigned to the Department.
The SLCG also celebrates its 11th Anniversary today (Mar 4).
Mementos were exchanged between the Defence Secretary and SLCG Director General to mark the visit.
