SLCG marks 11 years of service excellence today

Marking the 11 years of service excellence, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) celebrates the 11th Anniversary, today (Mar 4).

The SLCG commenced its operations following the enactment of the Coast Guard Act No. 49 of 2009, on Mar 4, 2010, under the auspices of the then Defence Secretary and incumbent President His Excellency Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Initially the basic training for the SLCG personnel began at the Naval establishment, Welisara and subsequently, the professional training was conducted at the Japanese Coast Guard Training Centre, Tokyo.

    

Proceeding a charming ceremony in 2001, six small vessels dedicated for the SLCG were launched at the Beruwala Fisheries Harbour under the patronage of the then Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa.

 

Following the eradication of terrorism in Sri Lanka, the fifth Executive President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the capacity of Defence Minister, presented a cabinet paper to re-establish the Department of the SLCG leading to enact the Coast Guard Act. No 41 of 2009 through the parliament on July 9, 2009 and instituted the Department of SLCG.

Thereafter, operational duties were ceremonially inaugurated on Mar 4, 2010 under the headship of Rear Admiral L D Dharmapriya who was the founding Director General.

 

Since its inception, the SLCG has evolved into a professional maritime law enforcement agency as of today while acquiring numerous assets, capabilities and competencies.

A number of celebratory events have been organized giving prominence to religious activities, social welfare and customs in parallel with the anniversary day.
