Army buys produces of Jaffna farmers
March 16, 2021Strengthening goodwill and reconciliation between farmers and Security Forces in Jaffna, the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has initiated a project to sell Jaffna-grown vegetables and fruits directly to all Army personnel.
Those purchased produces will be distributed among Jaffna Peninsula Army troops at subsidized rates and further plans are afoot to dispatch them to Colombo area for onward distribution on a regular basis as a welfare measure, the Army said.
The project would be a lucrative avenue for the Jaffna peasant community in the long run.
This programme was implemented under directives of the Security Forces Jaffna Commander Maj. Gen. Priyantha Perera following the guidelines of the Chief of Defence Staff and Army Commander Gen. Shavendra Silva.
