Creating wonders in depths
April 11, 2021‘Underwater Gallery Nilwella’ in Nilwella beach situated in the southern coast constructed by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) was vested in public yesterday (10).
Minister of Youth & Sports, Hon. Namal Rajapaksa declared open the project at the invitation of the Navy Commander Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne.
According to the SLN, this was a collaborative initiative with the Fisheries Ministry and State Ministry of Ornamental Fish, Inland Fish, Prawn Farming, Fishery Harbour Development, Multi Day Fishing Activities and Fish Exports.
New underwater gallery reflects a 100 metre-long and 40 meter-wide model town beneath the surface.
During the process, the project also has considered protection of marine ecosystems and prevention of harmful effects for marine species due to human presence.
It also offers an artificial fish breeding ground, substrates for coral reefing and a magnificent site for scuba divers.
The new underwater gallery also includes sculptures, structures and other artefacts moulded using eco-friendly materials, discarded vehicles and aircraft as well as artificial substrates specially designed for coral breeding, the SLN said.
This site is visible even by snorkelling or through dinghies with transparent bottoms.
This project intends at attracting tourists and diving enthusiasts and also steering a culture of recreational diving at the venue.
Southern Province Governor, Hon. Willy Gamage, State Minister of Ornamental Fish, Inland Fish & Prawn Farming, Fishery Harbour Development, Multi day Fishing Activities and Fish Exports, Hon. Kanchana Wijesekera, Southern Naval Commander, Rear Admiral Priyantha Perera and state officials, were also present at the occasion.
