SLN seized a stock of cannabis and onion seeds
May 08, 2021A stock of cannabis weighing 235 kilos and about 522 kilos of onion seeds have been seized yesterday (May 07) during special operations conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) during an attempt to smuggle into the country via sea routes.
The SLN said that the stock of cannabis in 118 packages contained in six sacks and seven Indians were nabbed in the seas off Kudiramalei Point.
The street value of the seized consignment is believed to be over Rs. 70 million and the they were set on fire while the seven Indians were repatriated back to their home waters due to the concerns of the transmission of COVID-19, the SLN also said.
The SLN further said two Sri Lankan suspects along with onion seeds which were in 20 packages were nabbed in the seas off Negombo on the same day.
The 02 suspect, the stock of onion seeds and the dinghy were handed over to the Customs Preventive Office, Katunayake for onward legal action.
The operation was conducted adhering to the prevention guidelines for COVID-19.
