Army organized Football Tournament provides fillip to ethnic harmony
April 02, 2019An inter-league football tournament was organized by the Security Force Headquarters - East (SFHQ-E) recently. According to Army media, the 'Eastern Commander Champion's Trophy' football tournament was held at the Weber Stadium in Batticaloa on Sunday (31 March).
Teams of nine football leagues in the Eastern Province took part in the tournament which commenced on 10th last month (March). The final match held at the Batticaloa stadium saw the Batticaloa Football League take away the 'Eastern Commander Champion's Trophy'. The winning team was presented with the championship trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 75,000.00. In addition, certificates and cash prizes were also presented to the runners-up and for individual performances.
The Ampara Football League and Trinco-Kinniya Football Team won the second and third places respectively.
Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake graced the final match held on Sunday and presented trophies and certificates to the winners.
Religious dignitaries, Commander, Security Forces - East (SF-E) Major General Aruna Jayasekara, senior military officers and football enthusiasts were also present to witness the final match.
This tournament provided football players of all ethnicities in the Eastern region an equal ground to involve in their sport symbolizing ethnic harmony, mutual understanding, friendship and peaceful co-existence.
