Army assists flood affectees of Western and Southern Provinces
May 17, 2021Sri Lanka Army troops under the supervision of the Security Force Headquarters (SFHQ) – West have been assisting the stranded civilians and attending to their urgent needs following the torrential rains and overflowing of rivers.
As the Attanagalu Oya overflew, 6 Sri Lanka Artillery troops rescued more than 100 trapped civilians in Gampaha and ferried them to temporary relief centres.
Meanwhile 14 Gemunu Watch troops of the 613 Brigade were busy supporting the affected people in Elpitiya, Neluwa, Thawalama, Baddegama, Yakkalamulla, Nagoda and Niyagama.
Ferrying civilians on boats amid heavy downpours and stormy winds, road clearance work, victim evacuation from earth slip-prone areas, supply of reliefs, and medical assistance etc. is immensely helpful for the people.
Disaster Management Centre employees and civilians also co-operated with troops.
Similarly, 12 Sri Lanka Field Engineers troops carried out disaster relief assistance work for flood- affected civilians along Pitigala-Walallawita road which remained non-motorable while Troops of the 3 Gemunu Watch in Matara are still conducting search and rescue operations and disaster relief activities in Akuressa where the Nilwala river has overflowed.
