SLCG nabbed fishing vessel with illegally harvested shark fins
May 17, 2021Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) personnel deployed at Beruwala fishery harbour apprehended one multi-day fishing vessel along with six fishermen for possession of illegally harvested shark fins (approx. 55 kgs) recently.
SLCG personnel found illegally harvested shark fins hidden onboard, the SLCG said.
The retaining onboard, transshipping or landing the ‘Fins or Carcass of Sharks of which fins have been removed’ is an offence under the Shark Fisheries Management (High Seas) Regulations, 2015, the SLCG also said.
Fishing vessel and arrested persons were handed over to the Fishery Inspector (Beruwala) for onward legal action.
