Flood warning red alert for Kelani river basin
June 05, 2021The Irrigation Department issuing a red alert warning said according to the analysis on experienced rainfall and current water levels of river gauges in Kelani River, water level at Hanwella could be increased up to 9.00m and water level at Nagalagam street could be increased up to 6.60ft within next 6 to 16 hours.
An average rainfall of around 125 mm has been experienced in the upper catchment areas of the Kelani River basin during last 24 hours ending at 9.00 am today, it also said.
The Irrigation Department warns that there is a high possibility of considerably increasing current flood situation in low-lying areas of Kelani River Valley situated in Dehiovita, Ruwanwella, Seethawaka, Dompe, Homagama, Kaduwela, Biyagama, Kolonnawa and Wattala Divisional Secretariat divisions.
The residents and vehicles running through aforesaid areas are requested to be extra vigilant in this regard in order to save valuable lives and public and private properties, the notice added.
