SLN nabs another haul of smuggled cannabis worth of Rs. 52 Mn
June 21, 2021In a bid to cripple the drug smuggling ring, the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) yet again nabbed 174 kilos and 50 grams of Kerala cannabis along with a dinghy and two suspects, during a special raid at the seas off Thondamanaru, Jaffna last evening (June 20).
Five kilos of dried turmeric were also found apart from the Cannabis, the SLN said.
According to the Navy, the street value of the seized haul of cannabis is believed to be around Rs. 52 million.
The suspects nabbed during the operation were residents of Point Pedro and Mullaithivu aged 28 to 34 years.
Persons in custody along with the items seized and the dinghy were handed over to the Kankesanthurai Police for onward legal proceedings, the SLN said.
SLN sources also said they have commenced a number of patrols in island waters to curb wide-ranging illegal acts including the smuggling of drugs via sea routes.
Inshore Patrol Craft P 177 and Z 196 and Z 215 craft of Special Boat Squadron, led by the Northern Naval Command intercepted the suspicious dinghy while they were approaching the beach area.
The seizure was carried out adhering to the stipulated healthcare guidelines, the SLN confirmed.
