Formal Inauguration of 'International Yoga Day'

Defence Secretary Gen. Kamal Gunaratne (Retd) at the inauguration of the 7th edition of the ‘International Yoga Day’ delivered the keynote speech through video conferencing today (June 21).

HE Gopal Baglay, High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka delivered the welcome address of the inauguration using zoom technology while the zoom messages of HE the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Hon Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi added the significance to the day, the Army stated.

A Yoga training demonstration session was also held at the Army Headquarters at Sri Jayawardenepura today morning attended by Chief of Defence Staff and Army Commander Gen. Shavendra Silva.

The Sri Lanka Army over the past few years has benefited through ancient mind-body healing practice as regular Yoga exercises have been used to enhance the mental and physical robustness and mental stability of soldiers, the Army added.

The Army sources also said that the proceedings were also simultaneously telecast via video technology for the benefit of the troops.

Dr Rewant Vikram Singh, Director, Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre and renowned Yoga Instructors attended the Yoga programme.

A few senior Army Officers also joined the training session while following strict health guidelines.
