Military to further strengthen healthcare facilities
June 25, 2021The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) renovated High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila, was vested in public today (June 25).
The newly setup facility is capable of treating up to 20 COVID-19 contacted patients highly dependent on oxygen therapy by means of dedicated equipment, the SLN said.
The SLN further said the HDU also facilitates healthcare workers to monitor the condition of patients receiving treatment.
This noble project commenced in a bid to strengthen the government's initiative to enhance and modernize the infrastructure required for the COVID-19 contracted patients.
According to the sources, following a request made by the Health Ministry, the SLN undertook the setting up of this special unit along with the financial sponsorships of philanthropists.
The facelift to a ward complex into a HDU was conducted utilizing the technical expertise and manpower of the SLN commencing on May 20, 2021, SLN said adding, they were able to complete the unit within a short span, fulfilling a timely need.
Navy Commander Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne presided over the handing over event today and Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena, Director Colombo South Teaching Hospital Dr. Sagari Kiriwandeniya, former Acting Director Colombo South Teaching Hospital Dr. Pradeep Wijesinghe, senior naval officers and a few hospital staffers were also present.
