SLCG nabs fishing vessel carrying thresher sharks
July 13, 2021Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) nabbed a fishing vessel along with five fishermen in possession of illegally harvested 27 kilograms of thresher shark flesh recently.
The SLCG’s fishery monitoring and regulating staff attached to the Myliddy Fishery Harbour seized the illegal harvest and the fishermen while they were returning after a month-long fishing.
The items were recovered when they had been concealed amongst their usual fishery harvest.
The retaining on board, transshipping or landing the ‘parts of any shark species’ is an offence under the Shark Fisheries Management (High Seas) Regulations, 2015, the SLCG sources revealed.
According to the SLCG, suspects with the haul of illegal harvest were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector, Jaffna for onward legal proceedings.
