SLN foils Rs. 31 million worth Cannabis racket
July 16, 2021Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) nabbed 103 kilos and 750 grams of cannabis worth of Rs. 31 million along with three suspects and a dinghy at seas off Kankesanthurai, Jaffna yesterday (July 15).
The SLN’s Northern Command during a special raid carried out in northern seas seized the suspicious dinghy transporting the haul of Kerala cannabis.
Naval vessels during the raid had noticed the illegal cannabis haul being thrown overboard from a suspicious dinghy which was boating landward, having assumed that they were to be searched.
The SLN suspects that the smugglers might have retrieved the stock of cannabis into the dinghy at the International Maritime Boundary Line intending to smuggle them into the island.
According to the sources, the suspects held during this operation were residents of Point Pedro and Kilinochchi, from 20 to 40 years of age.
The persons taken into custody with the haul of cannabis and the dinghy were handed over to the Kankesanthurai Police for onward legal proceedings.
The entire raid was conducted adhering to the healthcare guidelines, the news also confirmed.
