SL Coast Guard-hatched 108 sea turtles released
July 28, 2021Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) released newly hatched 108 sea turtles into the Sri Lankan beach under the turtle conservation project led by SLCG recently.
Accordingly, sea turtle hatchlings born out of eggs conserved at Mirissa, under the care of SLCG Rohana were released into the Mirissa beach, the SLCG said.
Managing the seaboard, a waste free area, precariously laid eggs hatched for incubation, was released under the directives of Director General of SLCG Rear Admiral Anura Ekanayake.
In accordance with the project mooted to conserve sea turtles, maximum efforts were taken to conserve turtle eggs either at their natural habitats or adjoining suitable place, assuring its safety, the SLCG added.
Conservation of sea turtles is one of the main concerns of SLCG.
The recent release of turtle hatchlings is a positive sign of recovery of the marine environment following the environmental hazards triggered over the ill-fated vessel, MV X-Press Pearl, the SLCG also said.
